Idols in Undies

We knew Ebony Jointer, one of the trio of roller-skating carhops on the "The Best of the Rest" audition show, was a hot little number, but we didn't know how hot until Reality TV Magazine uncovered that during the 2005 season, the 23-year-old from Hacienda Heights, Calif., was a member of the Chicago Bliss, a Lingerie Football League team that competed in the Lingerie Bowl, a pay-per-view flesh football contest that aired during halftime shows.

Ebony's other career highlight is a turn as "Bikini Model #5" in the movie "Pauly Shore Is Dead" (a more egregious credit than Lingerie Football in our view). She is also credited on an Internet modeling site with having been on "America's Next Top Model," though not as a contestant. FOX had no comment on Jointer's previous career excursions, but we can't help wondering whether her resume played a part in why the golden-throated skater did not appear on the leaked Top 24 list.

AKRON: IDOL INFORMED

TMZ.com reports that fallen Idol contestant Akron Watson is claiming that FOX producers knew about his 2003 pot bust, "from the very very first day, before I even auditioned."

On a radio interview with "Tony & Cappy In the Morning" on KDMX in Dallas, Watson said producers have still not come clean with him about why he was told he wouldn't be making the trip to Hollywood. "I questioned and questioned, and they had a psychologist call me because they thought that I might be flipping out, but I just really wanted to know why I went down there and earned my ticket and didn't get a chance to go."

Although there is speculation that the marijuana conviction led to Watson's dismissal, it seems unlikely to us. Criminal or unsavory backgrounds have led to contestant eliminations in the past (i.e. the Brittenum twins during Season 5's Hollywood rounds) -- even during the live rounds (Jaered Andrews, Frenchie Davis and Corey Clark in Season 2). But in the midst of Season 4, TheSmokingGun.com revealed that contestant and eventual runner-up Bo Bice had a couple of arrests and one conviction for drug possession, while fellow finalist Scott Savol had been arrested for domestic abuse. Neither Bice nor Savol were eliminated for their pasts. Reps for "Idol" continue to have no comment on the controversy.

WHAT SONG WOULD YOU CHOOSE?

People magazine asked some celebs what song they'd choose for an Idol audition. Here are their answers:

• Nelly Furtado: I would sing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" just to be different.
• Neil Patrick Harris: "Rocket Man" by Elton John. It has good range. It tells a bit of a story but it's not so straight on the nose like I'm singing about long-lost love or something. And Elton John is pretty kick-ass.
• Deborah Gibson: I would sing "Lost in Your Eyes" so I could get the royalty check since I wrote it. No, really, I would sing something by Richard Marx because his melodies are amazing and then there's no pressure to sound like the original artist because he's a man. I think the biggest mistake (contestants) make is singing a song by someone of the same sex who they can't hold a candle to. So I'd probably sing "Right Here Waiting for You." Something simple and melodic.
• Katie Couric: "Faithless Love" by Linda Ronstadt.
• Lauren Conrad (The Hills): Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'." I've karaoke'd it many times.
• Andy Roddick: I don't sing. If I ever did something musical for a girl it would not end up in me getting her. It would end up in her walking away. I wish I was musical. I am so jealous of people who can sing. Maybe if they had Menudo night or .Bananarama with some fun 80s music, I could get away with something
• Billy Bob Thornton: I'd sing "When The Levee Breaks" [by Led Zeppelin]. That's a song that's very apt for the times.

PORE IN NAME, RICH IN HEART

According to Celebrity Spider, 64-year-old Sherman Pore, who sang The Duprees' "You Belong to Me" on the L.A. audition show, says he petitioned the show's producers to let him sing for the judges as a tribute to his late partner, Melissa Miller, who had died just two days before audition. Since the show aired, Pore has since appeared on a number of news shows, where he has fought back tears to explain his decision to become an American Idol.

He said, "She passed away on Friday morning and for the next day and a half I was sitting around the apartment dumping several buckets of tears, and she said, 'Stop your crying, get off your tail and go out and do what you promised.' "

IDOL ALUMNI NEWS

Fans of Season 2 finalist Kimberley Locke can catch the video of her new single, "Change" (see Chartwatch below), exclusively on AmericanIdol.com. Listening to it is another reminder of how much talent has flowed from Idol in a scant five years.

Locke's sophomore album, "Based on a True Story," scheduled for an April release, is a much more “hands-on” project for the singer, who only co-wrote one song on her first album. She assisted in the writing of nine songs on "Based."

The song-writing sessions were a very emotional experience for Locke, who admitted she cried during many because they entailed divulging aspects of her personal life to her co-writers. The song "Change" is about a pivotal moment in Kimberley's life when she was deciding whether or not to stay with her ex-fiance.

Locke still keeps in touch with many people from Idol, particularly those who were behind-the-scenes, including music director Michael Orland, makeup artist Mezghan Hussainy and hair stylist Dean Banowetz. She also talks regularly to both Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken.

Locke's business interests include Croton Creek Steakhouse and Wine Bar in Croton, N.Y. She’s also taking acting lessons and will be touring in support of the album release in late summer or early fall.

She only came in 7th on Season 3 of Idol, but in the past two months Jennifer Hudson has won the Golden Globe and SAG Best Supporting Actress awards for her role as Effie White in "Dreamgirls," as well as an Oscar nomination in the same category. Now on Feb. 25 at 7 p.m., Hudson will be interviewed by Barbara Walters for her annual pre-Oscars special.

Hudson, who will discuss her Idol experience, tells Walters that if she had won "America Idol" she probably would not have gotten the role of Effie. Also appearing on the special are Hudson's "Dreamgirls" co-star and Best Supporting Actor nominee Eddie Murphy, as well as Best Actress nominee Helen Mirren and Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres.

... Donna Reynolds' Idol Chartwatch reports that Katharine McPhee’s new CD debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200, selling 116,000 copies in its first week, second only to Norah Jones’ "Not Too Late." McPhee's album was #5 on the Internet Album sales chart and #2 on the Digital list. Katharine’s staying power on the charts will depend on how well her single “Over It” does.

"Daughtry" took third place this week, with almost 77,000 more copies sold in the album’s 11th week of release. The album was #8 on the Internet Album sales chart, #6 on the Digital chart and #1 on Top Rock Albums.

"Dreamgirls," featuring Jennifer Hudson, was #7 on the Billboard 200, #16 on the Internet Album sales chart, #1 on the Soundtracks chart and #4 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.

Carrie Underwood’s "Some Hearts" dropped 10 spots to #24 on the Billboard 200. It was #3 on the Country chart; Taylor Hicks was down 13 spots to #76 on the Billboard 200; Fantasia was #90 on the Billboard 200 and #18 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart; Kellie Pickler’s "Small Town Girl" was #87 on the Billboard 200 and #12 on the Country chart. American Idol.com reports that Season 5 finalist Chris
Daughtry will perform the National Anthem during the Chicago Bears-New Orleans Saints NFC Championship Game Sunday, Jan. 21st at 3 p.m.

Daughtry, Chris' band, will be the first live performer when Fox launches "The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet," hosted Mike Jerrick and Juliet Huddy, Monday Jan. 22rd at 9 a.m., according to Boston.com.

Daughtry's self-titled album stays in Billboard's Top 5, coming in at No. 4 this week. The single “It’s Not Over” has climbed to No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 14 on the Pop 100.

PARIS BENNETT
The Rockford Register Star reports that Rockford native Paris Bennett drops “Ordinary Love,” the first single from her debut album, “Princess P,” this month (her album hits stores in March). It goes to radio and iTunes first, then the video is released to music networks in February, E Online is reporting. Meanwhile, Reality TV World reports that "Princess P" is a family affair. It will be released on the independent label 306 Entertainment, owned by her uncle Paul Jones. "Princess P" features Bennett's mother Jamecia Venzett Bennett and grandmother Ann Nesby, both of whom were members of the vocal ensemble Sounds of Blackness. Bennett's 70-year-old great-grandmother is featured as well.

Also appearing on the CD are two of Bennett's co-finalists, Lisa Tucker and Long Islander Kevin Covais. Bennett and Covais will collaborate on a hip-hop track titled "Let Me Rap." "What people don't know is that he can rap," Bennett told MTV News about Covais. "He loves Kanye West. He'd rap whole songs. He used to freestyle backstage." While Bennett told MTV News that her duet with Tucker "is still in the works," she added the two "have become best friends since appearing on the show and talk daily."

And SOHH.com reports that the 18-year-old co-wrote the majority of the songs on the album and that since appearing on "Idol," she has begun developing her Tres P clothing line and performed at the annual Walt Disney Christmas Parade singing "Let It Snow" with fellow "Idol" finalists.

BUCKY COVINGTON
According to American Idol.com, Season 5 finalist Bucky Covington, 29, enters Hot Country Songs at No. 57 with his first single, "A Different World." Bucky is also the fifth Idol to appear on this chart, following Kelly Clarkson, Josh Gracin, Carrie Underwood and Kellie Pickler.
Bucky is the 26th American Idol singer to appear on a Billboard chart. You can listen to Bucky's "A Different World" here.

THE NEW WILLIAM HUNGS?
Reality TV Magazine reports that Kenneth Briggs and Jonathan Jayne became friends while waiting in line to audition for American Idol 6. Both suffered barbs from judge Simon Cowell, who told Briggs he looked like a bush baby and asked Jayne if he had borrowed Randy Jackson’s trousers. But the weird relationship earned the duo a guest appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on January 18.

Kenneth Briggs said Simon is “a guy who I really, really do not like.” When Kimmel asked Jayne if Cowell insulted him
as well, he said “Oh, not as much, it was Randy that really insulted me, he laughed through my whole song, he was laughing at me.” Kenneth said if he saw Simon Cowell again that he would ask him for an apology for what he said. At the end of the interview, Kimmel invited Kenneth and Jonathan to the Bob Hope Classic celebrity golf tournament in Palm Springs to interview celebrities for him.

OTHER SEASON 6 CONTESTANTS
Already newspapers are producing profiles of local contestants who have made it through Round 1 and earned a coveted Golden Ticket to Hollywood. The Arizona Republic has profiles of two. It reports that the family of Glendale teenager Jordin Sparks has been bombarded by phone calls and e-mails. Most callers were directed by Pam Wiedmann, Jordin's grandmother and manager, to Jordin's home page. Wiedmann said the fresh-faced alto's "got a pretty good perspective on fame growing up, with a dad in the NFL. She knows fame doesn't bring happiness. And her faith is an integral part of who she is." (Jordin's father is Phillippi Sparks, who played cornerback for eight seasons with the New York Giants and one season with the Dallas Cowboys.)

Jordin, who turned 17 on Dec. 22, was featured on America's Most Talented Kids in 2005 and was the spotlight winner at the Gospel Music Association awards in 2004. She has opened in concert for Montgomery Gentry and performed in Las Vegas for Mary J. Blige. She is also a model for Torrid, a fashion chain for plus-size women. A full-page ad for Torrid featuring Jordin ran in the December issue of Seventeen magazine. As winner of Channel 10's "Arizona Idol" competition, she received an all-expenses-paid trip from the station to the American Idol audition in Seattle, where she performed "Celine Dion's "Because You Loved Me."

The paper also profiled Peoria native Jarrod Fowler. When he stepped in front of TV cameras to audition for Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell, the 28-year-old Navy intelligence specialist said, "I had so many emotions when I walked through that door, my heart almost stopped." Dressed in his white Navy uniform, he sang his favorite song, "Bless the Broken Road," by Rascal Flatts.

Fowler beat out 50 other sailors to win an Idol-esque competition, "Reagan Idol," on his Navy aircraft carrier, the USS Ronald Reagan. His prize was an all-expenses-paid trip to an Idol audition. Fowler graduated from Centennial High School in 1997 and attended Northern Arizona University on a vocal performance scholarship. He later changed his major to political science and decided to join the Navy in 2005. "He always loved music, but after September 11, he wanted to go into the service," his mother, Leslie, said. "But he has a real gift.

"My husband and I cried when he came on. It was so overwhelming," she said. "I remembered all of the talent shows and performances at church over the years. I am just so proud of him. It really fills my heart."

In an AP story picked up by The Pioneer Press "crack baby" contestant Denise Jackson said, "There's a lot of controversy about what I said on 'American Idol.' Some people asked me, 'Why would you say that?' " Jackson said of her description of her upbringing. "It's the truth. I'm not ashamed of what I am. I'm a young lady." Jackson, who attends La Follette High School in Madison, credits her brother, 28-year-old Rafael Jackson, with being instrumental in her decision to audition.

"She's been telling me since she was 11 she wanted to do it," he said. "I told her I'd take her when she turned 16." So Jackson took his little sister to Minneapolis for the regional auditions and will also take her to Los Angeles. "This is her dream," he said. Denise started singing in church at age 4 and moved to Madison five years later to live with her grandmother. She said her mother is recovering from her problems with drugs and that she doesn't know her father.

She plans to release an R&B album Feb. 7 and wants to study music at the Juilliard School in New York City after she graduates next year. "Music is poetry. I write about what I know: boys I like, being a teenager in a rough place, a lot of stuff," she said.

TV Week.com reports that Simon Cowell defended Paula Abdul against accusations of inebriation during recent media interviews while speaking to journalists at the TV Critics Association press tour in Pasadena this weekend. "I've done those satellite interviews so many times and by the end of it I'm talking complete and utter rubbish," Cowell said. "I wouldn't do this show if Randy and Paula weren't on it. Don't condemn them for being wacky on occasion. I don't want to work with boring people."

The "Idol" session started 45 minutes late, raising speculation that Abdul might be to blame, but Cowell took the blame, saying his flight from London was late. Cowell also said Abdul's odd on-camera reference last year to moths, melons and cornflakes was his fault as well, explaing he had just told her a proverb using those terms during the commercial break. Abdul thanked Cowell for taking the blame.

"You have caused me -- you publicly apologized for that," she said, and gave Cowell a kiss. "[Everybody was saying] 'What's wrong with Paula? She's drunk, she's drugged.'" Regarding her satellite interview, Ms. Abdul blamed fatigue for her behavior. "I did three hours of interviews," she said. "The very last one I did had tremendous technical difficultly, there were split cities in my ear. It's hard to explain and unfortunately that's what happened."

In an interview with The New York Times, American Idol executive produce Simon Fuller said, “It doesn’t matter anymore if you win on the show,” noting that Chris Daughtry’s new album has been outselling the album released by last year’s winner, Taylor Hicks. He predicted the album would soon pass Justin Timberlake's as the nation’s top-seller, reaching at least three million in total sales. “You can finish fourth, like Chris did, or fifth or sixth, like Jennifer did [note: she actually finished seventh], and you can still make hits,” he said.

Fuller pointed out that music fans from many genres were now being exposed to “Idol” performers. “You have Carrie, who is selling millions of albums to country fans,” he said. “You have Kelly, who is a mainstream pop artist. And you have Chris, who is the first real rock artist we’ve broken on the show. There there’s Jennifer, who’s winning every award for ‘Dreamgirls.’ I just think the music is getting out everywhere, and subliminally that has helped.”

Between Episodes Update

Fair warning to future Idol wannabes: If you have any skeletons, bodies or even bones in your closet that you want to keep hidden, don't audition for Idol. You can't run and you can't hide from all the off- and online organizations that live to smear the show and its contestants (though skeptics might surmise that Fox, itself, is feeding this information to outside sources. After all, there really is no such thing as bad publicity).

To wit, TMZ.com , one of the
organizations most successful at digging up Idol dirt, reports that Thomas Daniels, the contestant who won a Golden Ticket to Hollywood on his third Idol tryout in Minnesota on Tuesday's season premiere, has a criminal record dating back to 2004. The first incident involved a DUI guilty plea in Clackamas, Ore., that resulted in a one-year alcohol diversion program and $680 fine. The incident was wiped from Daniels' record after he completed his sentence, but has now been revealed to the world through the Web. Daniels told TMZ.com, "I was young and dumb and drinking and driving."

Daniels, who was arrested again in 2005 for failing to appear in court for an arraignment on a hit-and-run accident, called the second incident "another young and dumb situation" but would not comment to TMZ.com on whether he had disclosed his criminal past to Idol producers.

Will he be booted from the Hollywood segment? Fox has
precedent to release Daniels if he hasn't been candid with them. He could follow in the footsteps of Season 2 finalist Corey Clark, who was dropped from the show after it was revealed that in 2002 he faced charges for a variety of misdemeanors, including battery on four law enforcement officers, battery on his sister, and endangering a child. (In 2005, Clark claimed he had an affair with Idol judge Paula Abdul during his run on the show). Similarly, twin brothers Terrell and Derrell Brittenum were eliminated during last season's Hollywood segment when it was revealed that at the time of the tapings they were facing forgery and theft charges.

But other contestants have survived, including Season 4
finalist Scott Savol, who had been convicted of two prior misdemeanors, including one for an assault on the mother of his 4-year-old son, and Season 4 runner-up Bo Bice, who had been busted in 2001 and 2003 on a series of charges that included cocaine and marijuana possession, public intoxication and possession of drug paraphernalia. One charge was eventally dropped and Bice completed a diversion program after pleading guilty to two misdemeanors.

And then there is perpetually embroiled in controversy Idol
judge Paula Abdul, who was charged with hit-and-run in 2005 for allegedly leaving the scene of a minor auto accident in late 2004. In spite of that, and the Corey Clark charges (which Fox said held no merit after its own internal investigation) and speculation on numerous occasions that she was under the influence of something while on live TV, Abdul has survived.

IN OTHER IDOL NEWS

... TMZ.com reports that Rosie O'Donnell
is now picking on American Idol. On Thursday's edition of "The View," co-hosted by Season 5 finalist Kellie Pickler, a clip of Wednesday night's Idol was shown in which Simon, Paula, and Randy mocked a particularly ridiculous contestant. O'Donnell called the show "so sad," blasted the "millionaire" judges for laughing at contestants and suggested that one judge was "probably intoxicated."

finalist Chris Daughtry’s “Home” is in contention to replace Daniel Powter’s “Bad Day” as the show’s unofficial elimination song. Producers are also looking at a number from Will Young, the original “Pop Idol” winner in England.

... PRNewswire.com reports that Season 5 finalist Mandisa
Hundley will release a debut album and book in upcoming months. Her album is expected to drop in May and will feature songs that reflect her struggles and success. The book, "IdolEyes," co-authored with Angela Hunt, hits shelves on June 1st and looks at the singer's journey to the No.1 reality show in America, how both difficult and triumphant events put her faith to the test, and her lifelong battle with food addiction.

... According to The Associated Press, Kelly Clarkson has
partnered with NASCAR in the biggest partnership NASCAR has ever made with a music artist. “Anyone who knows me knows I’m a race fan and love NASCAR,” said the Season 1 Idol champion and Grammy Award-winning recording artist. “I look forward to hanging out with the fans, drivers and the entire NASCAR community.” Clarkson will be “integrated into all aspects of NASCAR,” including TV spots, charitable events and NASCAR’s awards dinner. Other artists who have partnered with NASCAR include the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sheryl Crow, Jewel, Lenny Kravitz and LeAnn Rimes.

... CelebritySpider.com says that Season 5 runner-up
Katharine McPhee's self-titled debut album will hit stores on Jan. 30th. The first single, "Over It," went to radio earlier this week. To promote the album and single, McPhee will be making multiple TV appearances over the next few weeks, including "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" (Jan. 29), "The Today Show" (Jan. 31), "Live With Regis & Kelly" (Feb. 1), "TRL" (Feb. 5), "The Early Show" (Feb. 6), "Jimmy Kimmel Live" (Feb. 7) and "Larry King Live" (Feb. 8). As previously reported here, McPhee will also be a guest star on the hit TV series "Ugly Betty" on Feb. 1, portraying herself. The TV campaign kicks off today with a Webisode appearance on Lonelygirl15, the most watched and fastest growing Internet video series.

... According to Reality TV Magazine, Season 4 winner
Carrie Underwood and Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo were never dating. The site says that Tony Romo apparently made a joke about dating Carrie Underwood to the Illinois Times-Courier newspaper, and other newspapers and magazines across the nation picked it up and reported it as fact. In regards to Tony Romo, Tennessean columnist Beverly Keel quoted Carrie Underwood as saying, “I have read some of the most ridiculous things about that. The first time I ever met him was on Christmas, right there on the field. Everybody was like, 'Ooh, they are together.' And then I was blamed for Dallas not winning that game. . . . He is a very nice guy and I've talked to him a few times, but we are very much not together.”
